A New Modernism: 1960s Fashion In The 21st Century

Audrey Hepburn, Jacqueline Kennedy, Sophia Loren. Certain women of note iconically defined fashion in the 1960s with their sense of style. Designer Joyce Huang evokes this time of youthful exuberance in fashion with her new collection for Lucullen, adding in a bit of an edge to bring the 1960s into the 21st Century.

Once again, Huang has created pieces for Lucullen that are designed to elegantly take women through the demands of their workday and into their plans for the evening afterwards. This time, her creations exhibit influences from the Mod and Rocker styles of ‘60s British youth culture, updated and made accessible to professional women of any age.

“Fashion should be fun,” says Huang. “It should be fun to wear, fun to buy, fun to look at. So much of what was the 1960s, especially the music, had a joy, and a lightness, and a fun attitude to it. But there was just enough of a bite to it all to make it a little bit dangerous. This was the inspiration for this new collection.”

The playful, yet edgy, attitude Lucullen introduces in its Fall 2010 collection is seen in the cut, color combinations, and bold fabrics used for the pieces. The use of sequins and the detailing of several pieces give them a true ’60s rock star look. At the same time, Lucullen’s signature of luxuriously sensual fashion for women is seen throughout the collection. Versatility has been a hallmark of this unique, high-end fashion brand since its inception, resulting in its wide appeal to women of many lifestyles.

Huang, Lucullen’s founder and head designer, has successfully created various collections around the world, in cities such as Taipei, Shanghai, Toronto, and New York, for over a decade. She possesses the elegant talent to weave the passion and confidence of a true woman into the fabrics of her creations. Many have found her line “Soft but sculptured, creating an essence of professional appeal. Her style is tender and demure, but bold – desiring attention. If your Valentine’s Day was so great for you this year that you can’t wait until next year, you don’t have to. If it was a bit of a disappointment and left you wishing for better, here’s your chance. AsianinNY’s Chinese Valentine’s Day celebration brings all the fun, anticipation, and romance back one more time for this year.

There are several versions of the mythical romantic story from which Chinese Valentine’s Day originates. One version is a love story about the 7th daughter of the Emperor of Heaven and an orphaned cowherd. Displeased by their romance, the Emperor separated them. The 7th daughter was forced to move to the star Vega and the cowherd was moved to the star Altair. But loving his daughter very much, the Emperor relented on the punishment once a year, allowing the two lovers to see each other on the 7th day of the 7th month on the lunar calendar. Chinese Valentine’s Day is considered to be the most important day for people in love to go to the temple of the Matchmaker and pray for their love and the possibility of marriage. Single people go to the temple of the Matchmaker on Chinese Valentine’s Day to ask for luck in love.

MC for the night’s festivities will be stand-up comedian Esther Ku, a Season Six finalist on NBC’s “Last Comic Standing” and a featured regular in the Boston International Comedy Festival and the New York Underground Comedy Festival. On the bill to entertain guests at this Asian version of Cupid’s big day are folkloric and gypsy dance group Kulakova Dance Troupe, featuring Bollywood-style dance choreographed by the group’s creator, Julia Kulakova; the Exotic Experiment Band, which takes rock, funk, and electronic musical styles and adds exotic elements; and dancer and choreographer Rie Okamoto, who has performed on “Showtime at the Apollo.” There will be comedy from stand-up veterans Victor Chu and Chris Martin. Spinning music for the night will be recording artist DJ J4, who has released 4 rap albums with The Rock music production company in Taiwan.
