Narrated by Dustin Hoffman, Visual Acoustics (www.juliusshulmanfilm.com/) celebrates the life and career of photographer Julius Shulman, whose striking images brought modern architecture to the American mainstream. Shulman, who passed away this year, captured the work of nearly every major modern and progressive architect since the 1930s. Join us for a screening of clips from the film and a conversation with director Eric Bricker, who has created a testament to the evolution of modern architecture and a joyful portrait of the magnetic gentleman who chronicled it in photos.

The piece mines the texts and subtexts of centuries-old women’s songs to create an arresting vision of generational shifts that are reshaping our definitions of freedom and compromise, desire and longing, duty and love. In Bahu-Beti-Biwi, Gandhi’s characters have conversations with each other across time and space, merging dance, live singing and rhythmic text based on the language of the tabla (North Indian classical drum). An original score for the work is the product of a flourishing collaboration with composer Joe Trapanese whose music for the stage has been described as “precise and evocative” by the New York Times.

The Moon Festival, also known as the Mid-Autumn Festival, is a popular harvest festival celebrated by Chinese, Koreans, Vietnamese and many Asian communities; it is also sometimes referred to as the Lantern Festival or Mooncake Festival. The Moon Festival is a date that parallels the autumn and spring Equinoxes of the solar calendar, when the moon is supposedly at its fullest and roundest, and is one of the two most important holidays in the Chinese calendar. Traditionally, on this day, family members and friends will gather to admire the bright mid-autumn harvest moon, and eat moon cakes together. In a way, Moon Festival is considered Asian’s Thanksgiving Day.

Seeing the recent tragedy of Typhoon Morakot and embodying a sense of strong global awareness, AsianinNY.com urges its members, partners and friends to jointly organize this charitable and social networking event to assist the rebuild from the damage of Typhoon Morakot and to share the love between all Asian communities as well as everyone who is interested in Asian culture. The goal of AsianinNY is to facilitate connection and provide a platform for social networking. There is nothing harder than entering a new city or culture without a little help. This is a site for everyone who loves and wants to understand more about the Asian culture even if one is not an Asian. AsianinNY is continuously active in charitable activities and cultural events. The commemorative event is also celebrating the 60th anniversary for the National Day of China and Taiwan’s Double Ten Day, the national day of the Republic of China (ROC).
